Painting

The female form has remained a constant theme in my work and the figure is expressed in many different ways. Sometimes it appears as childlike and awkward, at other times it is barely there ~ the female form suggested in a few lines, colours or symbols or buried under the surface.

I work intuitively and my inspiration comes from many sources including children's art, outsider art, philosophy, nature, archetypal symbols and the ancient. I am drawn to certain symbols perhaps because they are archetypal and they also suggest the female figure, like the spiral, circle and triangle.

I work on a number of paintings, drawings and pots at the same time ~ Images come and go. Sometimes I paint over the whole surface and obliterate the images then lift the paint off with rags and paper towels or rub and scratch the surfaces with cloths or sandpaper. I love the accidental drawing that occurs ~ lines and marks and shapes ~ the layers build up, it can take me a long time to finish a piece of work ~ sometimes I return to works many years later.
