Written Art

The majority of written work was produced in notebooks ~ in many cases my bed was my studio, strewn with books and art materials.

It was a therapeutic practice to write… sometimes automatic writing, sometimes quotes from artists and writers that I was looking at. Art works developed out of a need to obscure and make the writing less obvious and transparent.

I also worked in these notebooks when travelling ~ drawings would develop as a passenger on long journeys…. informed by the movement through the landscape, an interesting sign or symbol, a song on the radio or perhaps a random thought.

There is an immediate typographic textural quality to these works… however, it can require a little bit of time and effort to uncover the meaning or context embedded within them.
